Each department is vital to the manufacturing process of a custom HDPOCKETDOORS frame. Here's an inside look into the Assembly Supervisor's department as we go in depth in explaining the process.
Describe the steps you do in the manufacturing process.
I often start with filling racks with common size door frame headers 36/32/30/28, taking 22' laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and cutting them to size. Later, as needed, they will be run through the planer to smooth track side surface, then top & bottom side edges are routered with a 1/8" router bit to achieve smooth edges.
Our most used track also has to be cut down to our common sizes and then handed off to someone to have an access hole routered in the end for hardware removal if needed.
Once the materials are stocked, I can now move forward to start a work order. Working from the cut list I make sure all the items are put together ready for me or someone else to begin assembly.
In the assembly process, the LVL header is laid down on the work bench and marked for a specific track and hardware. The track is then fastened to the LVL and then laid out for hardware (soft close/open, stops & size of door).
Then hardware is installed and tested. When everything checks out 100%, track covers are installed and then post brackets for the header and floor are attached to the header.
Floor brackets with designated stickers are attached temporarily for removal during the installation process. Hardware mounting brackets are placed in a tab with wrenches and instructions and a t-guide attached with instructions on the frame.
From there, it is sent over to the shipping department. Custom frames have a little more cutting and a lot more measuring. This would include making the track covers which are sized according to order. Depending on the size of the order, I will manufacture a pallet custom made for length & width to ship freight.
There is always clean up and odd & end things to take care of along with expedited orders that will have jump to the front depending on when the customer expects the order to arrive.
Are there any issues you might run into when manufacturing the frames and if so, how do you mitigate these issues?
Custom frames are usually a challenge, so I need to pay close attention to all the details and make the adjustments needed.
What kinds of tools and why are they used when manufacturing the frames?
Mitter box: Used for cutting LVL's & aluminum tracks
Table saw: Used for ripping down lumber to size
Planer: Used to smooth & size lumber
Router: Used to round over edges to avoid splinters during manufacturing & installation
Screw Gun: Used to install all the fasteners
Staple Gun/Nail Gun: Manufacturing pallets & shipping crates
Sander: Detail work
Framing Square: Laying out and marking for layout on track and soft close/open mechanisms
What's the most important part of the process?
Quality first, Customer satisfaction.

What made you want to intern at HDPOCKETDOORS? Is this your first time interning or have you interned here or other places in the past?
Interning at HDPOCKETDOORS was a good way to earn money during the summer and I was able to be involved in the family business. This is the only business that I’ve interned for, but this is the fifth year that I’ve worked for the summer.
What does a day of interning at HDPOCKETDOORS look like?
A day of work at HDPOCKETDOORS starts coming to work and starting by seven o’clock. If I don’t have a project I’m currently working on I’ll start the day by getting the information for a new one and then will work on that until lunch break. After that, I’ll continue working on the current project or move on to the next. During a project I’ll start with modeling the frame or object in 3D and then I can create a 2D drawing from that model.
What are you currently working on?
I’ve worked on a few projects this past week. One project was creating models and drawing for JE Dunn Construction, and another project was creating a display for Sun Mountain Doors.
What program are you using to create these models of HDPOCKETDOORS frames?
I’m using a program called Autodesk Inventor that I learned how to use in highschool. I also passed the certification test and got certified in Autodesk Inventor.
What have you learned since starting your internship?
I’ve definitely learned more in general about the process of how pocket door frames are manufactured. I started out working with the steel that is used in the frames, so I learned about how the brackets and post are made. While modeling the frames in Inventor, I’ve had to learn specific dimensions about each part in the frames.
What career are you pursuing in the future and how does interning here at HDPOCKETDOORS help you towards this goal?
I currently want to pursue a career in engineering, and more specifically, mechanical engineering. I think this field is broad enough to have lots of options, but also includes both the manufacturing aspect and the CAD work that I’ve been doing recently. Recently, the work I’ve been doing has helped me improve my skills on Autodesk Inventor. I also am able to learn about the manufacturing process of the pocket door frame and have experienced installing the frames too.
What is your favorite part about interning at HDPOCKETDOORS?
My favorite part about interning at HDPOCKETDOORS is that I get to do work while also doing something that I enjoy and that I’m interested in pursuing a career in.
Tell us about your favorite project you’ve worked on at HDPOCKETDOORS.
I think one of my favorite projects was working on modeling the Sugatsune synchronized frames because creating a working conveyor belt as part of the hardware was challenging, but afterwards I learned a new skill of making the conveyor belt.

What is the average install time for an HDPOCKETDOORS frame?
With rough opening proper, a frame can be installed in 30 minutes.
Here are the steps to installing an HDPOCKETDOORS frame!
What tools are needed to install an HDPOCKETDOORS frame?
Screw Gun: Used to remove and reinstall track covers. As well as to remove floor brackets and the T-Guide.
Nail Gun: Our preference is to nail the header to the framing. Others may choose to screw header to the framing.
Hammer Drill: For drilling pilot holes for blue screws when anchoring to concrete.
Hammer: For typical carpentry functions, mainly to hammer in the shims.
Level: To ensure the track is level and the posts are plumb.
Cats Claw/Pry Bar: To help with leveling the header.
Once you have these tools collected you are ready to install your HDPOCKETDOORS frame!
Here are some tips for a first time installer:
What are some common issues when installing a frame and how are they resolved?
The header will shim down out of square. To remedy this, use the torpedo level or speed square on the posts and track.
What are some things to keep in mind when ordering your first HDPOCKETDOORS frame?
Door thickness is important to consider because wall thickness will need to be larger for thickener doors. Make sure you frame your rough opening to exact measurements specified by HDPOCKETDOORS.
What is your preference of track, Soft Close Soft Open or standard I-Beam track? Determining that may have an influence by how often the door will be used.
Lastly, do you have a qualified installer? If you're local to Arizona, we offer installation services to the greater Phoenix area!

]]>First, meet TJ!
Q: What has been your favorite part of your new job and something cool that you've gotten to do?
A: My favorite part of the new job is working closely and learning from a very knowledgeable friend. I'm fortunate to have this opportunity to help build a small business and watch it grow. The coolest thing I've done is install in very nice areas and see some beautiful homes. I enjoy playing Tetris with the foam we use to ship odd packages as well!
Q: What is something new you've learned about construction so far?
A: I've learned that not all framing companies really check for level/plumb walls!! I also have learned about the different types of pocket door hardware and tracks used in installation.
Q: What has this new experience taught you so far?
A: So far my experience here (12 days) has taught me that if you make a reliable, custom, quality product you will have customers for life. I have only heard good remarks from any and all customers about the HDPOCKETDOORS product.
Q: What do you think sets HDPOCKETDOORS apart from other construction companies?
A: HDPOCKETDOORS adds a personal touch to each and every door frame manufactured. The owner of the company has his hands on every order, one way or another. They stand by the product and will always make it right if something is not working properly. With all of the employees, it is humbling to see how each person adds to the product and makes it the final result. The atmosphere in the work environment is great as well, always smiling and keeping us on our toes. Taking pride in this product is personal, and I love every minute of it!!
Next, take a look at Ryan's thoughts about his first few weeks as a pocket door guy!
My favorite part of the job is seeing the outcome of the final product. It's very satisfying.
I've learned how to use a planer. I had never used one before working here.
I think the biggest thing that sets HDPOCKETDOORS apart from other companies is truly the quality of work we produce.
Not to mention, the environment is almost stress free. I don't carry work stress home with me which is new to me, and I'm sure TJ can attest to that too.

Cordless tools have been around for a while now. Battery technology continues to improve, and cordless tool options continue to grow.
The core benefits of a cordless power tool—maneuverability and portability—have always been clear, but they often fell short of the power and performance of corded tools. However, with advancements made in recent years, is it now possible for cordless tools to match the corded power of an expanding catalog of tool types?
The key benefits of a cordless power tool are power, maneuverability, portability, battery life, and storage. We will explain each one below to show how cordless power tools have been able to help us.
Power
Cordless tools continue to raise the bar by delivering more torque, more power, and longer run-time.
Maneuverability and Portability
Without the hindrance of a cord, you do not have to rely on a secondary power source. Cordless tools offer maximum flexibility and portability. Whether working on a large job site or in tight space, cordless tools allow you to maneuver and move about freely without the encumbrance of tripping or tangling a cord. Their lightweight design even helps reduce worker fatigue. This portability is a clear advantage for contractors that need to move about frequently on jobsites or from project to project.
Battery Life
Most power tools on the market come with a lithium-ion battery, which can hold a lot of power that will not diminish over time when the tool is not in use. Interchangeable batteries from tool to tool allow you to build on your tool platform without having to buy more batteries and chargers.
Storage
Cordless power tools take up less room when stored or transported than corded ones. Things like cordless drills, saws, and impact drivers can be placed in drawers in rolling toolboxes for easy use on the job site. They can also be left in their individual storage containers to house the tool and its accompanying batteries.
Ready to cut the cord and go cordless? What is your opinion? Are you still using corded tools? What's your favorite tool? Here at HDPOCKETDOORS, we welcome the advancement in power tools and appreciate the benefits of going cordless. Lighter tools that maneuver easily with plenty of power help us get the job done and done right as we manufacture and install our heavy-duty pocket door frames.

]]>We just celebrated Thanksgiving, giving me the opportunity to take my foot off the gas momentarily to spend some much needed time with family. Besides eating a delicious meal with my loved ones, I had time to reflect on 2020 and the crazy course it's taken us on so far. I am so grateful that our company has been able to continue manufacturing, distributing and even installing our products without having to pause due to COVID-19. Although we have had to implement protocols to promote the safety of our employees and our customers. Even through all the challenges we have faced, I am so grateful to be working and providing for our families.
This year it seems we have had the opportunity to grow closer to our families as the on-campus learning was postponed and many parents were working from home. We made the best of it by spending time with each other while we were all at home. The whole uncertainty drew us even closer. As we continue to do our best to social distance, it gives you that extra need for the support only family members can give to each other. During this holiday season, it is important to express our gratitude to those who have helped us get through this crazy year.
When the holidays hit, it is a reminder that the year is on a fast track to come to an end. Work is pressing hard and customers are looking to complete projects. Expediting orders is a term used frequently. We continue to strive for the highest quality and customer satisfaction. Zoom meetings and masked site visits are the norm. We all depend on each other as we continue to work through this year together.
I’m so thankful that the holiday season gives us a chance to reflect on what’s really important. Taking some extra time to spend with family gives you just what you need to make it through the rest of the year.

So...a guy walks into a bathroom, opens the door, closes the door and barely squeezes by to access the toilet...
Waiting for the punch line? This is no joke! It's an inconvenience.
For instance, this Fall Break our family visited the Grand Canyon. While taking in this momentous event, we stayed at a local hotel. Five family members sharing a hotel room is doable, but sharing one bathroom is even more challenging. My wife and kids couldn't help but notice. "Wouldn't this be a good place for a pocket door?"
Sure, I know they're under the influence of the pocket door guy, but what a great point.
Why are pocket doors needed? To gain back space and functionality wasted from a swinging door. Nobody enjoys the side shuffle squeeze while going to do their business. Whether in new construction, remodel residential or commercial projects, space and square footage is too valuable not to maximize. Pocket doors will add space not subtract it from your project.
So now that you see the need for pocket doors, why should you choose HDPOCKETDOORS? Our heavy duty pocket door frames can be utilized for any application. Our team will work with you to choose the right pocket door kit for your project. As the manufacturer, our pocket frames can be built to your exact specifications. Of course we offer standard kits to fit typical wall thickness and door sizes through our website store. We are fully capable of customizing our system to fit any application.
Wow, it’s September already! What a year it has been so far. Kids are now settled back in school, well school from home for the most part. Some schools have opened up for on campus learning, while most have gathered virtually in one form or another. In our area, the schools are anxiously planning their regathering back on campus.
So, what’s exciting in the pocket door workshop this September? The demand for soft close and soft open is on the rise. Customers have been choosing this deluxe option in the majority of their pocket door projects, adding a feel of luxury and convenience. The fully concealed soft-closing and soft-opening feature carefully cushions door movement, allowing them to open and close with a gentle movement. Each time the sliding door is opened and closed, the effortless movement shows the high quality of this addition to our pocket frame kits.
What are the benefits to soft close and soft open? No more slamming doors. No pinched fingers. Soft close and soft open hardware has built in stops within the track with no need for a bumper in the pocket. The soft open mechanism will smoothly draw your door to the open position and hold it flush with the front of the pocket. The soft close mechanism will allow you to close your door and walk away as the door slides shut and gently slows down for the money shot as it draws tight to the jamb.
There are even more benefits to ordering the soft close soft open hardware in an HDPOCKETDOOR. The pocket door guys will expertly put together your pocket door kit for your exact door size. That means we will preassemble the track and hardware for your specific jamb thickness and door size, so you are set up to succeed when you receive one of our heavy duty pocket door frames. Not having to learn how to set up the track and hardware saves you time and money. The track and hardware is mounted to a manufactured LVL, which makes up our header assembly. It is complete with top and bottom post brackets to snap the included heavy duty tubular steel posts onto, creating the pocket and t floor guide to complete the kit. We include instructions along with QR codes with links to videos to walk you through the installation.
You might be wondering how you can get one of these pocket door kits to use on your next project. You can shop our product line directly on our website: heavydutypocketdoorframes.com. Afraid you won't find what you're looking for? That's not a problem when our heavy duty pocket door frame kits are completely customizable. That means we can make a system to work for your unique application. You can reach out through our custom contact form with your specifications, so we can get started building the pocket frame system you need! What's next? Follow along as we post our projects on instagram and you tube. Get inspired, get creative. HDPOCKETDOORS has you covered.
]]>The temperature isn't the only thing increasing here in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the past couple months, we have been seeing an upswing in large pocket door projects.
I'm not talking about quantity. I'm talking about the size. With the trend for floor to ceiling pocket doors on the rise, door sizes are growing. The four or five foot wide doors that are nine to ten feet tall are becoming the new norm.
Who other than the pocket door guys to call when you're looking for a pocket door frame? After all, these aren't just any pocket door frames. We specialize in heavy duty pocket door frames with soft close open capabilities. With nationwide shipping and pocket frames to fit any application, we are sure to come up with a solution for anything you can dream up.
Throughout the summer, we have been getting more orders for custom frames, many meant to fit in large spaces. While many customers like the freedom that comes with ordering custom frames, some might not know where to start. Since this has been a popular way to purchase our product, we wanted to provide some tips that can be used as a guide as you navigate all the options and possibilities.
First things first. One of the most important things to note when ordering a pocket door frame is your door size. This will affect your rough opening and the pocket frame capabilities, so it is crucial to have accurate measurements. There are several other components that should be determined to help you order your custom frame.
These are some questions that will help when looking for a custom pocket frame quote for your next project. What is the approximate weight of the door? What is the wall framing thickness? Do you have a floor plan or sketch to provide? What is the flooring application and thickness? Is the door going from floor to ceiling? What is the trim application: kerf jamb, casing, ezy jamb? What thickness will the jamb be? What kind of door handle will you be using? Will the door stick out of the opening or be flush in the pocket? We hope these questions guide you when ordering a custom pocket frame built according to your application.
As the doors continue to get larger, thicker, and heavier, we will continue to build our custom frames. Handcrafted to meet and exceed all your needs, our frames will make the perfect addition to a home, office, and everything in between. My only question is what is your next pocket door project going to be? We are looking forward to being part of it.
]]>This month I wanted to share how my dad has impacted me in honor of Father's Day. I have built such a strong relationship with my dad since I grew up working with him. I'm so lucky that I've gotten to see him make a living out of something he is so passionate about, and it's been really meaningful to share that with him. He has definitely given me a lot of business advice over the years, but his wisdom has also helped me in all areas of my life. I'm excited to share what I've learned from working with my dad and some of my favorite memories with him that made me who I am today.
The best life advice my dad has given me would be to follow through with what you say you're going to do so that you can demonstrate integrity. He has shown me what it’s like to have a relationship with God and how your life can change when you serve him with all your heart. I always strive to work hard and do my best so I can provide for my family and make time to spend with them outside of work just like my dad did for me.
I was first introduced to the construction business by my dad. Over the years, he’s taught me to always put quality before speed. Once you're producing the quality that you're striving for, you’re able to put out the kind of product that makes the time put into it worth it. You'll be able to speed up the production by implementing steps and processes without cutting the quality. Our business motto, "Do it right the first time", illustrates my dad's vision for our company perfectly and the determination he has always had to create a superior product.
I grew up going to work with my dad during the summers and time off school. Even when I was too young to work, I would just ride my bike and play out on the job site. I just enjoyed being outside and doing what I could to help my dad. It’s been an amazing experience to watch this business grow from such a young age and to start from the bottom and work my way up the ladder. I learned the importance of work ethic from working alongside my dad. I took every opportunity to do different tasks which helped me learn how to work with my hands and take pride in that work. I always knew that I wanted to somehow have my own business, and seeing how my dad worked directly with the men on his crew and how they respected and looked up to him helped me to realize that I wanted a similar relationship with my employees.
Working with my dad was definitely a huge highlight for me, but my dad always made time for other fun activities and sports. So many great memories were made when I went hunting and fishing with my dad. I always looked forward to our fishing trips in Mexico. It might not have been the safest trip, but it was so worth it. The fishing was unlike anything I’d ever experienced, and I'll cherish the memories of being in another culture and spending quality time with my dad forever.
Some of the qualities that I admire most about my dad are how hard he works, and more importantly, how he puts God and family first. He starts his day with prayer and devotions, and after working hard all day, he always comes in and has dinner with his family. Working alongside him has allowed me to see how generous he is with his tools. He is always willing to share with someone else without expecting anything in return. Above all, my dad is always there when anybody needs him.
I’ve always looked up to my dad for being such a great businessman. He has always been very organized with a place for everything. I’m really grateful for all the opportunities that I've had to work alongside him. I've really enjoyed seeing everything that has come out of the hard work he’s put into this business. He’s shown me that when times are tough, you can always work your way through it as long as you know how to work hard. Even if it doesn't always pay well, you can still take satisfaction in the work that you do with your own hands and the product that you deliver, trusting that compensation would come.
This Father's Day I took the time to truly thank my dad for everything he has done for me and taught me, and I hope you did the same. I’m glad I could work with my dad for all these years and have the privilege to learn and store up the knowledge he has passed down to me. It has been such a blessing to work side by side with the original pocket door guy and know that I can carry on his legacy.
]]>The best life advice that my mother has given me is to put God first. I have always seen her serve the Lord with all her heart and love her family with everything she has. I strive to follow that example and put my faith and family as my top priorities. She has always encouraged me to work hard so I can provide for my family. She has also taught me the importance of staying true to yourself and being someone who people can count on and depend on.
The best business advice my mom has given me is to always put your customer first and let them know how much you value them. She has told me to always give 100% of your effort and put your all into everything you do. It is also important to produce the quality product and end result that you want and that your customer deserves, which is always my goal here at the pocket door workshop.
While I have made so many memories with my mom over the years, there is one in particular that has always stuck out to me. I can remember when I was younger that my mom challenged me to go on a diet with her. We were both doing our best until I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to open up the refrigerator. I immediately spotted a dish of cherry delight which is my favorite dessert, so of course I got it out. As I was enjoying a bite, my mom came out, turned the lights on and yelled, "Mike!”. It’s definitely a funny memory to look back on, but this experience actually taught me that when you say you're going to do something you need to stick with it and do it.
Something I admire about my mom is the way that she puts 100% into her work, but she knows how to enjoy her free time with her family. She definitely knows how to balance her work with the rest of her life, and I could definitely see that growing up. She knows how to put her family first and focus on them without distractions which is something I am always trying to get better at.
One of the most important values that my mom has passed on to me that I want to instill in my children would be our Christian faith. We have always valued our faith in my family along with honesty, integrity, and hard work.
My mom and I work really well together. I can remember her being able to help me when I was doing schoolwork as a child, especially when I had to type up reports. She's written many books so she's very well versed in writing, whereas I am not. She has helped me out with that tremendously over the years, and we even worked together to create this website. I really enjoyed working on that together, and I was able to see her skills at work.
I'm really proud to have her as my mom and to have worked on so many different things with her over the years. I’m so grateful for my mom and the relationship we have, so I hope that you take the time today to thank your mom and all the important women in your life for the impact they’ve had on you.

Q: What is your experience in the construction field?
A: I've been doing construction for 36 years. I started out framing, then moved to trim carpentry. After about 5 years, I partnered with my father-in-law and later he passed the business on to me.
Q: Why did you choose construction as your career path?
A: I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so I thought I would give construction a try. Framing was interesting, but I liked the trim end of the business more.
Q: What is your favorite part about working in the construction industry?
A: I liked seeing wood turned into the focal point of the house. At the end of the day, it felt good to look back and see the beauty in what you did!
Q: What advice would you give to someone who owns a construction business?
A: Make sure you love what you do, and don’t just make it about money. Taking pleasure in what you’ve accomplished will mean a lot more at the end of your life than how much money you’ve made.
Q: How do you spend your time outside of work?
A: I’ve always tried to put my wife and kids at the top of my priority list, often ahead of my work. I enjoyed quality time with my wife going to as many of my kids' events as I could. I enjoyed hunting and fishing, but more than anything I enjoy glorifying God in everything I do, work or play!
Q: What is something new you’ve learned at the pocket door workshop?
A: Not sure if it is new, but that quality comes before speed. It is not about how many frames you put out, but how great each one is.
As you can see, we are very lucky to have Norm on our team! We can't wait to see where this new journey in construction takes him. We know he has always flourished in this industry. We are so excited to teach him more about the art of pocket frames and see what we can learn from his experience. We want you to know how much we appreciate you, Norm. Welcome to the team, pocket door guy!

Q: How are the pocket door guys preventing the spread of the pandemic?
A: We are taking all the necessary precautions by washing our hands and keeping our distance by giving coworkers ample space to feel comfortable. We are also keeping our meetings to a minimum and not meeting in groups more than ten people.
Q: How is the outbreak of the virus affecting your business?
A: So far our business hasn't been affected negatively. Our customers have continued to order our products, and we are trying to stay ahead of the game. We have had to take extra time to be cautious out of concern for the safety of our employees and take the precautions that allow us to have a safe work environment.
Q: How has this affected your vendors?
A: Our vendors have continued serving us well and are staying in contact with us. We all keep working together to make the best of such difficult times.
Q: What is hdpocketdoors doing to stay connected to its customers during this time?
A: We are returning all phone calls and emails promptly and keeping the communication lines open with existing customers and new customers. We are doing everything in our power to have a timely turnaround on orders. We will also continue to post updates on Instagram throughout the week and make the satisfaction of our customers our number one priority.
We will continue to take it day by day and do everything in our power to fulfill our orders. We will provide our customers with the service that they deserve and expect from the pocket door guys. Thank you for your continued support. We encourage you to make the most of each moment and enjoy quality time with your family. We will continue to work through these difficult times and be stronger when we come out on the other side.

Having a good work-life balance has many positive effects including less stress and burnout and better overall health. This is beneficial for both employees and employers alike. Healthier employees are more productive, miss less work and have fewer healthcare-related expenses. Work-life balance is not about dividing the hours in your day between work and personal life, but it is more about having the time to work and the energy to enjoy your personal life. It is important to understand that not everyone’s work-life balance will look the same. The key is to create it based on what works for you.
Having a job and a career you are passionate about is important, but it should not be your entire life. It is in your best interest to prioritize the things that make you happy. Balance is not something you find; it is something you create. If you do not plan time for your personal life, you will never have time to do other things outside of work.
You might think that having a perfect work-life balance means you will have an extremely productive day at work and then you will spend the other half of the day having an amazing time with friends and family. The above is the perfect situation, but it is not always possible. Don’t seek the perfect life, seek a realistic one. Some days you will spend more time working, while others you have more time and energy to spend time with your loved ones. The idea is to achieve balance over time, not in oneday. Remain open to evaluate your needs on any day. This is how you will find balance.
]]>Hdpocketdoors, joined by Stay Awhile Designs, kicked off the new year by attending Design and Construction Week. The Las Vegas Convention Center was the co-location for the multi-industry event with the International Builder's Show and the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show. Many innovative, new products with cutting edge design and development were showcased in their exhibits.
It was great to have access to so many venues at one location. The value of seeing their unique products and speaking with them in person was well worth the cost of admission. It was very inspiring to see so many companies pushing the envelope and coming up with solutions for problems and continuing to lift this industry.
We listened to a variety of speakers share knowledge from their expertise and experience in their field. This event also offered informative sessions from industry leaders to help you grow your game and get you fired up to succeed in this new year. The educational sessions not only gave you a moment to get off your feet, but also left you filled with knowledge and inspiration. They even gave you tools that you could immediately put into action in your own business.
As beneficial as it was to see the newest products and tech available from the hottest companies in the industry, it was very uplifting to meet so many tradesmen and professionals in their fields. It was important to take the opportunities to meet these individuals and brands that are out there grinding in this industry. The networking connections found at Design and Construction Week were exceptional. I am so thankful for the opportunity to be part of an industry that comes together at such a powerful event. Looking forward to next year and what Design and Construction Week has to offer.
]]>We kicked off in January with a milestone installation of 17 heavy duty pocket door frames installed in one day and in one house for Morgan Taylor Homes. We made a return trip for an additional frame, totaling 18 frames all with soft close soft open and utilizing Top Line Grant Hardware from Hettich America.
We are always looking to think outside the box and come up with custom solutions for our customers projects. We had the opportunity to work with the synchronized soft close open track and hardware from Sugatsune America. We put together a mock wall implementing their track and hardware in our heavy duty pocket door frame system, and it has been a hit for customers looking for a stand out converging pair ever since.
This April we began selling the Cavilock pocket door hardware, listing the products both on our Instagram page and our web site. This makes it very convenient for customers to purchase their pocket frames and door handles at the same time from a company they know and trust.
This June we brought in our summer apprentice. We want to do our part to keep craft alive and pass our knowledge onto the next generation. He got to see firsthand what it takes to be a pocket door guy by starting with the basics and fundamental parts of the frame. We look forward to having him join us again next summer when he'll build on the skills he learned.
September was our 4k giveaway. As we hit 4000 followers on Instagram, we held our first giveaway contest to celebrate. The prizes were our 5500-150 SD with soft close/open for a 30" x 80" door in a 2x6 wall along with a slot cutter and some pocket door guy swag. The lucky winner of the contest was Adjilongowoodworks in El Monte, CA. We had a lot of participation in the contest and look forward to doing another giveaway in the future.
This November we introduced our track protective cover. This cover can be used through construction before the door is installed in the pocket. Its purpose is to keep the track free from dust, paint, drywall mud, and other contaminants during the construction process. We care about our customers' finished product and want these frames to continue to function properly for years to come.
Thank you all for being a part of a fantastic 2019 for hdpocketdoors! We hope you all had a merry Christmas and wish you a happy new year! Let's make 2020 a banner year.

Here at the pocket door workshop, when the gloves go on, the grind begins.
We are all about the hustle and bustle, but it's nice to take a moment and reflect on the big picture. What better time than as we roll into Thanksgiving to give thought to what I am thankful for!
I grew up in a Christian home with loving parents. I have one sibling, a kind, sweet sister. Being five years younger than me, she may have got picked on a bit. No admission here though. Both my parents were involved in the family construction business, which gave me the opportunity to learn the importance of hard work and what it means to provide for your family. Working on a framing crew alongside my dad, I learned how to build relationships as we built custom homes. It gave me the drive that I could accomplish anything if I put my mind to it.
I am blessed with a wonderful, loving family. This coming August marks 20 years of marriage to the most magnificent woman. Not only is she a super wife, but she is an awesome mother to our three amazing kids. It's quite a journey raising our three kids, daughter, son, daughter. What a thrilling ride teaching, guiding, loving unconditionally. The adventure continues as we watch them grow up, and in their faith. Of course, my faith in Christ gives me the strength it takes to make it through the day-to-day, and also gives me something to strive for long term as well.
Back to the pocket door workshop, I'm so grateful to be working alongside my dad as he is reaching toward retirement and passing on the family business. The knowledge and experience that I have gained and used in my personal life as well as this business is priceless. The father and son relationship is very special, especially in the work place, and I wouldn't trade this time for anything. Ultimately, I am so thankful for the family I have that supports me as my role in this company continues to grow. I hope this sparks a little reflection for you as you enjoy this season. We will see you next time at the pocket door workshop.

Many people may be wondering how to achieve this goal. Well, you're in luck! We're going to give you our top tips to help you have the perfect pocket door frame installation.
]]>It's the dream of every business owner, contractor, and worker in the construction industry to have a successful install...
Many people may be wondering how to achieve this goal. Well, you're in luck! We're going to give you our top tips to help you have the perfect pocket door frame installation.
The very first thing you should do in preparation is gather all the tools and supplies needed: step ladder, level, screw gun, 3" drywall screws, hammer drill, and shims.
1. When placing your pocket frame order, you need to make sure you know your door size, wall thickness, jamb thickness, and clearance from the subfloor to the bottom of the door. If your specifications are custom, communicate these important details to the pocket door guys before ordering your heavy duty pocket door frame. Our standard frames are for 2x4 and 2x6 walls with a 3/4" jamb, 3/4" lap, and 1" clear from the subfloor to the bottom of the door.
2. Now that your frame is ordered, you will want to frame the proper rough opening. Here is the formula for our rough opening. Width = door width x 2 + 1". Height = door height + 5 1/2". Your rough opening preparation is now complete.
3. Wow, that was quick! Your pocket frame has arrived! Time to open up the package and see what you've got! The first thing you see is instructions and a diagram that you should follow step by step.
4. You will also notice a hardware bag that includes the door mounting brackets, screws, and adjustment wrenches. It is crucial to keep this bag somewhere safe until you are ready to hang the door. When you install the brackets, make sure to predrill to avoid splitting out the top edge of the door.
5. Remove the header assembly and prep for the install. As you install the header, use shims as needed to make sure it is level and straight and fasten securely. .
6. Install the post assemblies, creating your pocket. Use your level on the outside edges of the posts and adjust so they are plumb. Fasten the floor brackets securely with the included fasteners.
7. Fasten your T-guide in the center of your pocket. Follow the T-guide diagram instructions. Let it stick out 3/8" in front of the poplar nailer on the post. This will keep it engaged in the door when the door is closed. Use the remaining two fasteners to secure the T-guide to the subfloor.
Looks like your pocket frame install is complete! Keep the door hanging hardware safe until you're ready to hang the door.
We hope these tips helped anyone who is new to pocket frame installs or just needed some further explanations. We include detailed instructions in all our pocket frame kits. Feel free to contact us with any comments or questions. Order your heavy duty pocket door frame here on our website:

It may have taken a little convincing, and there was a lot of laughter...but I was able to interview my little bro about his working experience so far.
]]>As my siblings and I have grown up, my dad and papa have expanded and improved their construction business, turning them into the pocket door guys they are today. They are two of the strongest and smartest men I know, and they have been able to pass their wisdom and knowledge onto their new apprentice.
Elijah's natural talent for putting things together and carefully following instructions to create a work of art has already shone through during his short time in the shop this summer. It may have taken a little convincing, and there was a lot of laughter...but I was able to interview my little bro about his working experience so far.
Q: Has working in the shop this summer sparked an interest in construction for you?
A: Yes, being around all the construction tools and learning more about the trade makes me want to keep improving and learning more about it.
Q: What is your favorite new skill that you've learned at the pocket door workshop and why?
A: I like using the nail gun, which is a faster way of hammering the nails. It's fun to use because it shoots out the nail into the wood. Every time a nail gets shot out, the gun bounces off the wood and makes a really cool sound.
Q: How has working alongside two experienced builders impacted your experience in the shop?
A: I guess it just helps because whenever I don't know how to do something they're able to show me how to do it. It also helps me to be more careful because they can tell me what not to do since they've made mistakes.
Q: What is a piece of knowledge you've received while working that you are able to use in your everyday life?
A: My dad told me that quality is more important than speed. I can use that advice in school because you don't want to rush your work when you could make it look good by putting effort into it.
Q: What is an obstacle or challenge that you've had to face during work, and how did you overcome it?
A: Well, sometimes when I'm stacking the post brackets, one of them won't get pushed in all the way because another one is blocking it. I learned that I have to make sure they're all lined up straight so they are stacked evenly.
Q: How do you find ways to make this job fun and enjoyable despite the hard work?
A: Since it's really loud in the shop, I have earplugs that are Bluetooth so I can listen to music while I'm working. It makes it pretty fun so I can move to the beat while I'm doing the different jobs they have for me.
Elijah is really enjoying accomplishing various tasks at the pocket door workshop, learning new skills, and building his confidence in his work. Both Jim and Mike are very proud of all the progress Pocket Door Guy Junior has made.

Here you'll find a father-son duo that has the determination and drive to carefully craft the pocket door frames of your dreams. Even in the scorching hot summers of Phoenix, Arizona, the construction crew begins each work day bright and early. Of course, not until after they gulp down at least one cup of coffee. Jim prefers his black, while Mike would rather drink a quad shot from Starbucks.
Well, even though I'm not technically a pocket door guy myself, I am a huge supporter of Jim and Mike's business. I (Makaila) am actually Mike's daughter and am proud to help promote his heavy duty pocket door frames. After all, I have seen firsthand how hardworking and talented he and my papa are.
You can experience the high quality of the steel pocket door frames for yourself by checking out the wide variety of options on our website. You can even go to our Instagram page to see the pocket door guys in action.
